Spaced Retrieval Practice Imposes Desirable Difficulty in Calculus Learning

چکیده

Abstract After being taught how to perform a new mathematical operation, students are often given several practice problems in single set, such as homework assignment or quiz (i.e., massed practice). An alternative approach is distribute across multiple homeworks quizzes, increasing the temporal interval between spaced Spaced has been shown increase long-term retention of various types mathematics knowledge. Less clear whether spacing decreases performance during practice, with some studies indicating that it does and others not. To clarity, we tested produces gains, but short-term costs, calculus course. On worked on learning objectives either fashion (3 quiz) 3 quizzes). Spacing increased an end-of-semester test reduced quizzes. The reduction was nuanced: only first two questions, leaving third question unaffected. We interpret these findings evidence led more protracted, ultimately robust, learning. We, therefore, conclude imposes desirable form difficulty

Desirable Difficulty in Learning: A Computational Investigation

Certain difficulties of a word learning situation can promote long-term learning, and thus are referred to as “desirable difficulties”. We use a computational modelling approach to examine the possible explanatory factors of the observed patterns in a cross-situational word learning experiment. Our results suggest that the within-trial ambiguity and the presentation duration of each trial in ad...

Reducing Verbal Redundancy in Multimedia Learning: An Undesired Desirable Difficulty?

Previous research on the redundancy principle in multimedia learning has shown that although exact correspondence between on-screen text and narration generally impairs learning, brief labels within an animation can improve learning. To clarify and extend the theoretical and practical implications of these results, the authors of the present research examined the extent to which varying degrees...

Repeated retrieval practice and item difficulty: does criterion learning eliminate item difficulty effects?

A wealth of previous research has established that retrieval practice promotes memory, particularly when retrieval is successful. Although successful retrieval promotes memory, it remains unclear whether successful retrieval promotes memory equally well for items of varying difficulty. Will easy items still outperform difficult items on a final test if all items have been correctly recalled equ...

Erroneous Examples as Desirable Difficulty

Erroneous examples, an unusual and challenging form of learning material, are arguably a type of desirable difficulty for students that could lead to deeper learning. In a series of studies we have done over the past three years involving web-based math instruction, the learning benefits of erroneous examples we have observed occured on delayed tests, as occurs in the desirable difficulties lit...

Retrieval practice and spacing effects in young and older adults: An examination of the benefits of desirable difficulty.

In the present study, we examined how the function relating continued retrieval practice (e.g., one, three, or five tests) and long-term memory retention is modulated by desirable difficulty (R. A. Bjork, 1994). Of particular interest was how retrieval difficulty differed across young and older adults and across manipulations of lag (Exp. 1) and spacing (Exp. 2). To extend on previous studies, ...
